Jazz, anyone?

Anyone reading this here blog a fan of jazz? Contemporary or classic, leave a comment with your favorite artist, clubs or whatever listed.

For the record: I enjoy classic jazz artists such as Miles Davis, Hank Jones, The Duke, Thelonious Monk, Sonny Rollins and Stacey Kent.

Last night, I was listening to Sketches of Spain by Davis and it hit me how well he tells a story with that sax.

I love Jazz but you know as well as I do that orthodox Jews don't really like music.

I'm not so into "straight" jazz, but Davis' "Bitches Brew" is a classic album, more of a jazz-rock fusion sound. Traffic (w/Steve Winwood) is a great '60s - '70s band that has jazz/rock/folk/psychedelic influences in their music - you can check them out on Youtube; the songs "The Low Spark of High-Heeled Boys," "Glad" (instrumental) and "Freedom Rider" come to mind esp. as "jazz-based", but I love pretty much all of their stuff. And, as you know, "Dark Side" has a nice jazz sound on several tracks, like "Money" and "Us and Them"

with some good alternatives. I imagine being hit up by people all the time for donations must get on artists' nerves, and wouldn't exactly thrill their dealers either.

I grew up on jazz. The Duke, Thelonious Monk, Dizzy Gillespie, and of course Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald, and then there is John Coltrane that I adore. The list is long. I think if you listen to music very early you learn how to appreciate it. When introduced to jazz late - you might like it less. I know a lot of people that absolutely hate it, and I cannot figure out why. Maybe because for someone who grew up on Ben David and Miami Boys Choir it is too complex, almost like classical music.

"That Sax?"

I thought that Miles Davis played the trumpet, not the saxophone.

If you want to hear a sax, try Lew Tabackin (who also does flute).
